About Maldives

Overview

Maldives is a little island country in South Asia situated in the Indian Ocean. It consists of 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks, grouped in clusters. The island extends over 820 kilometers from north to south and 130 kilometers from east to west, making it one of the world’s most geographically dispersed sovereign states.

All the islands in the Maldives are low-lying, none rising to more than 1.8 meters above sea level. Velana International Airport

Velana International Airport (IATA: MLE, ICAO: VRMM) is the only international gateway into the Maldives. Located on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll, it is well-connected with major airports around the world. Owned by the Government of Maldives, it is operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited. The airport serves as a hub for Maldivian and Trans Maldivian Airways.

To get to the city center, you can either take the Airport Ferry, which usually requires 15 to 20 minutes of traveling time, or take a speedboat transfer. The airport has 3 runways: the Domestic Terminal, the International Terminal, and the water dome Seaplane Terminal.

Even though the airport is not very huge, it is still well-equipped with a number of facilities to make sure you have a comfortable journey. There is a fully stocked pharmacy, wheelchair for the elderly and the disabled, as well as a 24-hour health care centre. There is also an infant and mother care centre, free shower rooms, Wi-Fi, trolleys, a prayer room, smoking lounge, ATMs, and a post office. Baggage storage and wrapping services are also available.

One of the world’s smallest capitals in the world, Male is known for its colorful buildings and ancient mosque. It is one of the most visited places in the Maldives. Majeedhee Magu is primarily popular for clothes, but you can also find electronics, bags, cosmetics, accessories, watches, shoes, and perfumes here. Male Local Market is located on the northern side of the island and is ideal for fruits and vegetables, coconut milk, dry fruits, pickles, and local snacks.

The Maldives does not have many luxurious and large malls. Centro Mall in Hulhumale Island is a great place for international brands.

Getting around Maldives

The easiest way to explore Maldives is by walking. All of the resort islands, including Male, are easily manageable on foot. The local ferry network is quite limited, and ferries are often late. Since this mode of transit is quite unreliable, it is not recommended.

If you want to reach somewhere in a hurry, take a seaplane. This will allow you to enjoy a scenic bird’s-eye view of the reefs and islands.
